3 Useful Maintenance Tips Homeowners Should Know About Refrigerators

Posted on: 21 December 2019

When you think of important home appliances, the refrigerator is usually near the top of the list. Without it, keeping foods and drinks fresh would be impossible. To make sure that your refrigerator works great for years, remember these maintenance tips.

Vacuum the Condenser Coils

Since the condenser coils are at the bottom of your refrigerator, they have a tendency of getting dirty from time to time. Although this seems minor, dirty condenser coils can cause your refrigerator to work harder than normal and then it may not last as long as it should.

Fortunately, cleaning these coils isn't that difficult of a job. You can actually use a standard vacuum cleaner. Use it to remove dirt, debris, and dust that have collected on these coils over the months. You might also use a compressed air can for any sticky residues that are left over after cleaning the coils with a vacuum.

Check Seals Regularly

In order for a refrigerator to do what it's supposed to do, the seals need to be intact. If they're not, then cool air could escape and then cause all sorts of future issues. That's why it's so important to inspect the seals on both doors on a regular basis.

Give them a thorough examination on all sides. If you notice that there are tears or other structural issues, you'll want to have them replaced as quickly as possible. You can do this yourself or have a refrigerator contractor come out. The sooner these seals are replaced, the sooner your refrigerator will work optimally again.

Don't Keep Interior Too Cold

Many people think that the colder the temperatures are inside their refrigerator, the longer their food will last. However, keeping your refrigerator too cold will cause the compressor to work harder than it should. Then, it may break down prematurely and lead to a costly replacement.

So that this doesn't happen, try keeping the refrigerator at an optimal temperature range. You should be able to find out what this optimal range is by looking at your refrigerator's owner manual. Don't deviate from this range at all.

Refrigerators play such an important role for almost every home today. If you have one and are looking to keep it working great for as long as possible, know what refrigerator maintenance steps to take in the beginning. Once you know what to do, keep this maintenance protocol going constantly throughout the year.
