Your Home Furnace: Keeping Your Furnace Running Smoothly Throughout The Year

When you own a home, there are many maintenance tasks to keep track of. Your home furnace should be serviced once a year to ensure that it works properly throughout the heating season. If your furnace is not working properly, there are a number of things you can do to check the system for small problems. When you can't fix a problem on your own, it's time to call a furnace professional that can assess the situation for you.
Air Filters Should Be Cleaned Once a Month
When your furnace is running every day, you will need to change or clean your air filters on a monthly basis. When the air filters are clogged, this can problems with the efficiency of your home furnace. Look at your manufacturer's manual to learn how to change the filters, or talk with a professional repair company to show you how to do it.
Change the Thermostat Battery
When your furnace isn't getting your home any warmer, find the battery on your thermostat and see if it is working. A simple battery change and this could fix your heating problem.
If you hear your furnace going on and off a lot, or your fan doesn't shut off, make sure that your fan is on the right setting. You want to make sure that your system is on the automatic setting most of the time. When your fan is set to a different setting, the fan won't shut off.
Before calling a heating professional because your room isn't getting warmer, look to see if the thermostat is on the heating mode. Also make sure that the temperature you have the thermostat set to is higher than the current one in the room.
If the Pilot Light Keeps Going Out
One reason your home furnace may not work properly is that the pilot light keeps going out. You will need to check the area for drafts to see if this is what is causing your pilot light to extinguish. The light may also be going out because of problems with the ignition system and clogged within the unit. Call a professional if your pilot light keeps going out and you don't know why.
